Terrorism and Weapons

Updated: Sep 6, 2023

Hi guys! This week we are talking about Terrorism which is one of the most pressing global issues that we face today. Terrorism is the use of violence and fear to achieve political or ideological goals. It has caused countless innocent lives to be lost, created a culture of fear and mistrust, and threatened the very foundations of society! In this week’s blog, we will discuss the impact of terrorism and gun violence on society, and the potential solutions to address these critical issues.

India is among the 25 worst terror-hit countries, according to the 10th edition of the Global Terrorism Index (GTI). The GTI score of India was 7.175 in comparison to 8.822 of Afghanistan that topped the index. This score considered deaths, incidents, hostages, and injuries due to terrorism over a five-year period.

There are different types of terrorism, each with its own unique characteristics and motivations which aim to break down political systems, sometimes even secretly supported by governments as well.

Terrorism has a profound impact on human rights, affecting society physically, psychologically, emotionally, culturally, politically, and economically.

  • Bombings, assassinations, and other violent attacks cause loss of life, property damage, and physical injury and Terrorist groups often target vulnerable populations, such as women and children.

  • Most people living in areas affected by terrorist attacks suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. Survivors of terrorism are more prone to substance abuse and other psychological coping mechanisms.

  • Attacks on cultural sites, artists, and cultural events have a devastating impact on the practice of culture. The destruction of cultural sites, such as the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria or the Buddha of Bamiyan in Afghanistan, have a long-lasting impact on the cultural heritage of humanity.

  • While the human cost of terrorism is immeasurable, there is a significant economic cost too. Terrorism causes immediate impacts, such as infrastructure damage, and wreckage of transport systems. Furthermore, once affected by the shock of a terrorist attack, the affected stock markets have trouble and take a long time to regain the trust of investors.

Weapon Abuse is another global human rights issue that threatens our most fundamental human right, the right to life. More than 500 people die every day due to violence committed with firearms. Easy access to firearms (legal or illegal) is one of the main drivers of gun violence.

To address the issue of gun violence, governments worldwide must implement stricter policies including stronger background checks, stricter regulations on gun sales, and better enforcement of existing laws. Governments must also address the root causes of gun violence, including poverty, inequality, and lack of education and mental health support.

We can’t be silent while all of this is shaking our world, as a global community we must stand together to denounce terrorism and the use of weapons in any form. We must instead embrace peaceful and constructive means of resolving conflicts and promoting social justice.

While there is no easy solution to these complex problems, we should prioritize the development of effective and transparent law enforcement and intelligence systems that can identify and prevent terrorist activities before they can even occur. By working together and taking proactive measures, we can create a safer and more secure world for all!
