Sex Workers

A taboo even in today’s times, sex workers continue to face stigma, discrimination and lack of legal protection. Ensuring safety of sex workers and preventing their exploitation and trafficking remains to be a problem. Multiple support organisations exist to advocate the rights, safety and well-being of sex workers. One can help by volunteering with such NGO’s and advocacy groups. They provide essential services like healthcare, legal assistance and counselling. Though it is not possible for everyone to take some time, so one can donate as well. Such organisations are not always funded and are in need financial support too. There are empowerment programs present to provide training in communication and financial management to empower sex workers and to help in them in forming informed decisions about their work and personal lives.

Providing a platform for the sex workers to share their stories and perspectives is also very helpful. One can provide support by understand their experiences and standing up against derogatory language and jokes. Establishing skill development programs is just as supportive as new employment opportunities are presented to them. Implementing comprehensive sexual and reproductive health programs that provide information and contraceptives help promote their overall well-being and help in disease prevention. Establishing vocational training programs is also helpful for sex workers that want to transition to alternate livelihoods.

In the end, a comprehensive and empathetic approach is required to drive a meaningful change. Individuals play a role just as crucial as the institutional and governmental organisations.
